Does PrimeSpace provide a help service?

Most people start to develop their first Web Site from a position of little knowledge and have a steep learning curve to climb. To help you, each PrimeSpace hosted site has access to a Support Database through its control panel. You will find this an to be an invaluable source of information. How does the Internet Work?

There are many web sites which explore the history and workings of the internet and it is not appropriate to deal with that issue in its entirety here. In simple terms the internet is a mass of computers, all talking to each other using software called protocols. Effectively, when you log on to the internet through your internet service provider your computer becomes part of the internet.

What is the World Wide Web?

Put simply the www is the accessible information (mainly web pages), stored on the internet. This dynamic mass of information changes continually as computers which store the data connect to and leave the internet.

What is Web Hosting?

Web hosts, like PrimeSpace, use computers called servers which are online all of the time. The information that you store in your hosted web space is available to the internet 100% of the time, not just when you log on. You can elect when to access and change the information. You do not need to leave your own computer connected to the internet all of the time.

Can you create your own web server?

You can, of course, do this. Be warned though, you will need to be prepared to spend the time trying to understand web server software. You will need a dedicated computer with adequate backup facilities, preferably a second computer, and a permanent internet connection. You will need to ensure that your internet service provider does not object to you developing your server as doing so can breech your service agreement. Also, it is best to have a fixed IP address, something that few internet service providers provide. So why bother when professional high quality web hosting like that provided by PrimeSpace is so easily affordable?

What is an Internet Protocol (IP) address?

As stated earlier, computers talk to each other across the internet using software called protocols. Each computer has to be able to identify itself and others and uses an IP number to do so. An IP addressed consists of up to twelve numbers arranged in the format of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and is unique to an individual computer.

What is a Domain Name?

How complicated life would be if we had to search for every piece of information by numbers. A domain name is effectively a front for the IP number, which should be easier to remember. For example, primespace.co.uk is a domain name. Domain name regulation is overseen by controlling authorities such as Nominet (for .co.uk type names). Once you own a domain name it is yours uniquely for life, unless you fail to renew it.

Is it expensivre to buy a domain name?

Possibly yes but probably no. If your chosen domain name is available for you to buy you can do so directly through a regulatory body, such as Nominet, but this tends to be expensive. Buying the domain name through a web host such as PrimeSpace is much much cheaper (less than a tenth of the cost). This is mainly because the process is fully automated, cutting out administrative costs.

Can I build my own web site?

Yes. This is the best way to understand how it all works. Web sites are written in a variety of computer scripting languages, the commonest of which is called html (hyper text markup language). There are a variety of WYSIWYG editors, such as Frontpage and Dreamweaver, which ease the process. Give it a go. All you have to do is write the pages and load them into your web space. If you want a helping start or just don't have the time, you could let PrimeSpace do it for you.

Once I've written my pages how do I put them into my web space?

You use a (yes, you guessed it) protocol. This time known as a file transfer protocol or ftp. All PrimeSpace hosted sites allow full ftp access. WS_FTP seems to be the most widely used protocol. Full information on how to do this is provided by PrimeSpace when you sign up to a hosting package.
